My life was a waste of skin
I spread like a cancer
When it came time for me to take you for a spin
You didn't have a chance
I could go into all the sordid details
Did you hear my other songs
They wasn't wrong
They got it right
Brother I saw no light
I took the 9 circles down
Seemed like the only way
Say what you want about Hell
You couldn't ring my bell
Let me spell it out for ya
When it came time for me to face Ol' Scratch
They took a batch of boiling oil
Spilled it down my back
The Devil's bevies made me hard
But kept me just at the edge

Junior High 01/01/97
If I thought back far enough
I'd find an untouched part of me
And see me in your virgin arms
My virgin eyes my biggest charm
And if I went back fast enough
I'd pass my future cares away
You'd kiss me with your virgin lips
My virgin tongue your swaying hips
I'd press your skirt you'd stop my hand
I'd tell you how I understand
You'd kiss my neck you'd lose my breath
I'd press your skirt you'd stop my hand
I had a thing
I had a thing
I had a thing for her
And though I never kissed her lips
I taste her even now
I'd press your skirt you'd stop my hand
We'd go somewhere we hadn't planned
You'd kiss my ear you'd shock my brain
I'd press your skirt you'd stop my hand
I'd find an untouched part of me
And see me in your virgin arms
My virgin eyes my biggest charm
And if I went back fast enough
I'd pass my future cares away
You'd kiss me with your virgin lips
My virgin tongue your swaying hips

Rite Of Passage (Spring '96)
I've never been one before
I always felt like I was putting on a show
I always thought I could do more
I always thought I was the one who didn't know
I've never held one for long
I always dropped 'em before I touched 'em
I always had to be hit on the head with a BONG!
I always loved 'em before I hated 'em
You have been a rite of passage
You have put me through the ringer
You have sent me off on a rampage
Why do I always have to be the singer?
Sitting in a smoke filled hole
Banging on a sacred drum
Crying on a hairy arm
Trying not to suck your thumb too long
I never sucked my thumb too long
I'm sucking now
I'm sucking now
Ripping up my security blanket
I just have to learn
I just have to learn
Just have to learn
I just have to learn
I'm not leaving any notes on the door
You already know where I am
I always felt like I was putting on a show
I always thought I could do more
I always thought I was the one who didn't know
I've never held one for long
I always dropped 'em before I touched 'em

Sentimentally Retarded (Spring '96)
You're sentimentally retarded
But I shouldn't try to structure group home love
I should let the birds eat bread off my shoulder
I should always know what I'm thinking of
You're some sort of mystic autistic
I'm just a guy paid to take care of you
I can't pretend to understand
But won't you please let me tie your shoe?
You look so cute in your little white helmet
Designed to keep you from smacking your head on the wall
I know you don't want my help going down the stairs
But I just hate to see you fall
You've got an order disorder
I shouldn't try to turn a pond into a park
I should let your tree kiss me
I should make love to your bark
You're sentimentally retarded
But you can't make a math class from special ed
I should let you peck the eyes right out of my head

One Go Round 03/29/96
I fell down a 10 year hole
Time to say it wasn't deep at all
Time to say I'm finally on my own
I tripped up a crooked decade step
Time to walk it didn't break my neck
Time to take the bones out of the bag
I sank like a buddha plopped in a pool
Time to surface, time to move
Time to feel my skin under the sun
We lose one go round
Every second that goes down
Time to say it wasn't deep at all
Time to say I'm finally on my own
I tripped up a crooked decade step
Time to walk it didn't break my neck
Time to take the bones out of the bag
I sank like a buddha plopped in a pool
Time to surface, time to move

We lose one go round
Every second that goes down
I Don't Think About Things That Aren't - Tom DeVincke (Spring '97)
It grows easier not to sleep
with every second that I don't
the shapes of the world are cut
slowly by my dropping lids
I could take a pill, I suppose
but that's really not the point
we have to be just what we are
that's more important than the sleep
It grows easier not to eat
with every meal I simply pick
the shapes on the plate are slowly cut
cut by a sawing knife
I should eat some more, I suppose
but that's really not the point
we have to be just what we are
that's more important than the meat
It grows easier not to fuck
with every passing sexless night
the shapes under sheets are cut
slowly by our shadow's blade
I should want to fuck, I suppose
but that's not really the point
we have to be just what we are
that's more important than the love
with every second that I don't
the shapes of the world are cut

I Don't Like It When People Say That Something Is Unnatural 05/97
I don't like it when people say that
something is unnatural
I guess that's because I don't understand
What they mean when they say it
I feel like saying to them, "If you
ever really witnessed something unnatural
your life would never be the same."
Then I think that they would misunderstand
me and say, "well my life wasn't the
same after I heard about that guy out
om Wherever who had 14 people
buried out in his back yard under an
old school bus."
And I feel sorry then, for the murderer, his
victims, and those who would
refuse to understand how natural such
encounters are

On The Dismantling Of An Engine (Spring '97)
"You don't know what you're doing," I
say, as my friend with the wrench
attacks what lies under the hood of
his car.
"You'll never get that back together
again," I say, when an oily fraction
emerges.
He says it's just a puzzle, if it goes
together once, you can always get it back
together again.
I wish machines were like rocks, and
that nothing had to be fixed.
I want to know how things work.
No one ever bothered to teach me. I
fear that's because they knew
I'd never learn.

Behind A Small Glass Container (Spring '95)
Behind a small glass container
which sits inside of a certain cabinet
that, when left open, blocks the bathroom door
from the flowing in and away from
a bedroom that is often, to the
consternation of its inhabitants, messy
to the point of distraction; this overflow
can make passage to the kitchen
laborious even in the best of light and
downright treacherous after the sun has
set and if all the lights are happen to be off...
it's all gotten away from us somehow

The Car Is In The Driveway (Spring '97)
The car is in the driveway
Waiting for the key
I'm holed up in my bedroom
Reading my book
It sees the road knows where
It wants to go
I turn pages but no corners
Still I don't know

Reading my book

It wants to go
