Horrible Line (late 1980's)

It's amazing what poetry can make us feel about women
It's amazing what a woman can make me feel about me
But it's never been amazing what I could feel about a woman
I never understood how strong those reasons could be

And now the poems don't flow, sometimes they don't come at
all
The words beat each other back down down into my throat
And they pile up one by one eating a hole in my heart
And they're blowing my sails even though the boat don't
float

I'm trying not to say 'em coz I know that they're not what I
mean
But once they fill my heart there's no place for them to go
So they dribble out my mouth I don't even know what they say
And then I see your face looking so dejected and low
I can't trust
That paper
I can't trust
That ink
I can't trust
My poems
Coz I don't even trust what I think
I can't trust the structure
I can't trust the rhyme
I can only trust my feeling
But that's as bitter as a lime
That's as bitter as a lime
I can't trust my poems
Just read that horrible line
Just read that horrible line
Read this horrible line
