shallow (shal'o) adj. -lower, lowest 1. measuring little
from bottom to top or surface; not deep. 2. Lacking depth,
as in intellect or significance: "His intellect was of the
shallowest order...his mind was in its original state of
white paper." (Lamb) -See synonyms at superficial -n. a
shallow part of a body of water, a shoal
It came into view.
From the jetty the yacht appeared to be doing beautifully.
He held his fiberglass pole and watched its white hull-
Effortless-
Ride (thesaurus, cruise) gracefully out of the channel.
Its fiberglass shape was unmarred by a name-
How could you rightfully name something that drew so much
attention?
He knew a girl like that. Her name was insignificant
Compared to her face.
He shook (jolted in Roget's) that thought away.
He saw his lure shine.
It would not be tasted that day.
The sandy shoal held no shoals, no schools.
The scraping began.
The fiberglass met the sand.
The sound drove the sea robin from the lure,
Into the cold, into the deeper water.
The sandbar accepted the yacht gracefully.
It did not complain.
Above, a man cursed and cursed.
The rotor spun the blade which stirred the sand.
The lure spun.
It came from the water breathlessly.
Glittering, brilliant.
The sea robin took its hideous face deeper.
This sea robin would be broken with a baseball bat.
Fishermen carried clubs, two by fours, baseball bats.
To kill the sea robins.
The sea robins were ugly you see.
The unrelenting sandbank held the yacht calmly.
The sand danced within the water, touching the
Fiberglass every now and then softly
Just near the surface of the sea.
He took the glittering lure from the line,
Threw it into his cavernous tackle box
And maneuvered (before Roget's-moved)
Along the rocks of the jetty
Back toward the sand.
The rich man cursed aboard his nameless
Stranded vessel which nestled nicely on
a strip of sand which formed a shoal
between two caverns, very deep
Through which a sea robin furtively swam,
avoiding water that was
shallow.
