She hated poetry she said
She laughed as she said it
She looked beautiful as she said it
Gorgeous
Thin
Striking
Aware
She said this with no malice
Or lack of respect
She simply had never found a reason
To like poetry
This is my lot in life
I am trying to make her like poetry
When really what I want
Is for her to like me.
I told her to read Adam's Curse
By William Butler Yeats
And told he to try and tell me
That she still didn't like poetry
She said, "Put the Northon Anthology away and kiss me."
But I wanted her to like poetry so
I read it to her
"I had a thought for no one's but your ears
That you were beautiful"
She said, "Your eyes say that better than
Keats (she meant Yeats) ever did."
I looked at her for a long time
And then I said, "You're right."
And then I said, "Your hips are like the
handlebars of my first bike. They're new, they're
fascinating, and they get me where I want to go."
You smiled and said, "If that's poetry,
I like it."
